The advantages of the location
|
The
city of Wittenberge with its population of well over 21.000 inhabitants
is located directly at the Elbe river - half way between Hamburg and Berlin.
In the past century, the inland port had been important, fish shops had
been located directly at the quayside and, of course, public Elbe baths
at the "Hammelwerder". Today, the Elbe is being discovered again
by the city and by its population. A marina was built, the old city is being
renovated - and the people actively engaged themselves during the 1st International
Elbe Bathing Day. Wittenberge is the gate for visitors and guests of the
neighbouring spa of Bad Wilsnack in the State-Extending Biosphere Reserve
Elbe River Landscape. The traffic connections to the neighbouring metropolis
Hamburg, Berlin, Magdeburg and Hannover are excellent. Within a circle of
a 150 minutes drive by car, there is the home of some 14 million people.
Particularly good are the train connections with Hamburg (1 1/2 hours) and
Berlin (1 hour). After the completion of an ICE track, travelling time will
be considerably reduced. It is planned to develop the B 189 to an Autobahn
Magdeburg - Rostock during the following years. |

| By the way: the idea to give a new kick to unprofitable industrial plants is not a new one. In Monterey, in far-away California, people had been forced to shut down the oil sardine industry set-up in a modern way before, because of a lack of sardine shoals through over-fishing! Today, the salt-water aquarium is regarded as one of the best in the world attracting more than 1.8 million visitors per year. |
