The
Elbe-Atlantic-Aquarium is coined by its clear orientation towards the location
and subjects, is unique in Europe and far more than a show aquarium in the
ordinary sense. It is able to link the vision of a near natural stream system
worth living with its high research- and environmentally educational potential,
namely with the leisure time demands of the visitors.
Well-known
migrating fishes, such as salmon, eel and the Elbe sturgeon extinct
today indicate as key species, that the river and the Atlantic Ocean,
sweet- and salt water, warm and cold water, moderate and subtropical
zones are linked to and dependant upon each other. The presentation of
such an inter-relation network of thrilling biological phenomena - supported
by known sympathy carriers such as otter and Elbe beaver
extend like a red thread through the adventure zone of the aquarium and
the outdoor areas.
Following the path of these fishes into the expanse of the oceans, the
visitor meets strange, subtropically coloured or Atlantic-cool biocenoses.
This way, the floating seaweed of the Sargasso sea, the lagoons
of the Gulf of Mexico with its coloured fish or the impressive fish shoals
of the Northern Atlantic are integrated into the concept of the exhibition,
because it belongs to the overall habitat of the key species. The knowledge
and experiencing of these interrelations is designed to promote the global
thinking of visitors, thus creating the basis and the willingness to actively
engage themselves in the protection of the unique Elbe landscape and the
neighbouring seas within the sense of entireness.
