Wild salmon in the immediate vicinity of the Elbe-Atlantic-Aquarium
In November 2002 for the first time after a long period salmon were moving again via Wittenberge harbour into the spawning river of Stepenitz.

The Elbe salmon is returning
For the first time after 70 years salmon spawn again in Saxony. In the year 2002 about 113 salmon were moving to the small Saxon river of Lachsbach. Wild salmon in the immediate vicinity of the Elbe-Atlantic-Aquarium.

The Sargasso Sea houses a bizarre underwater world. Among floating seaweed lives the Sargasso fish Histrio histrio from the family of angling fish.

Coral reefs in the Atlantic Ocean
Thanks to the Gulf Stream there are coral reefs even far in the North at the latitudinal level of the Bermuda Plateau. There are only a few different coral species however. But even in the Caribbean only six coral genera form 90% of the reefs.
 
Elbe fish on the way up
In Central Europe the Elbe is the river presenting the largest number of fish species. 42 different species have been found up to now. They present about 5000 individuals per hectare of water expanse.
 
The eel - a traveller between two worlds
It is only at the age of 10 - 20 years that the Elbe eel starts migrating towards its spawning grounds which are about 5.000 kilometer away. What really happens then in the depths of the Sargasso Sea still remains a secret to us.
